Stop for a moment under the arch, and look up. This gate is younger than it looks. It was built in nineteen thirty-two, exactly four hundred years after the name of Koszeg entered European history. In that year the town held out for twenty-five days against a vast Ottoman army, and those few weeks were enough for Vienna to prepare itself. So this is not the remains of an old town gate. It is a monument shaped like a gate, and you can walk through it into the old town. Go under it now, and turn right. What comes next is the heart of the town.

This is the main square of old Koszeg, and it still has roughly the shape it had centuries ago. Look around you. The houses are not the same height, the facades come from different periods, and yet they belong together. That is no accident. Koszeg was never rebuilt by the great town planning schemes of the nineteenth century, so the medieval street pattern survived. Now find the town hall. It is one of the oldest buildings in the country that has served the same purpose, without interruption, for centuries. If you sit down on one of the benches for a minute, listen to the sound of the square. This place is still in use. It is not a museum.

Two churches stand close together in the middle of this square, which is unusual in a town of this size. The older one is the church of Saint James, with its Gothic forms. Look at the buttresses along the side. They hold the walls up, because Gothic architecture reached for height, and height had to be braced from the outside. Step inside if the doors are open. On the walls, fragments of medieval paintings have survived, underneath the layers that were painted over them later. This building changed hands many times during the centuries of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, and every period left its mark on it.

This is where the thing happened that Koszeg is known for. In August fifteen thirty-two, the army of Sultan Suleiman was marching towards Vienna, and on the way it turned on this castle. The defence was led by Miklos Jurisics, with a few hundred men, among them unarmed townspeople. The castle was not strong, the defenders were few, and the attackers came at the walls again and again. After twenty-five days the Ottoman army withdrew. Historians still argue about what exactly happened at the end. What is certain is that this one August delayed the campaign against Vienna, and gave the town its name. Walk into the courtyard and look up at the walls. They are not high. That is precisely the story.

If you are here in the morning, wait for eleven o'clock. This is when the bells of Koszeg ring, and it is not the usual midday ringing. According to tradition, this was the hour when the besieging army broke off its attack and moved away. Ever since, the town has repeated that moment every single day. It is worth standing still for a minute when it begins. A custom like this says more about a place than any date can: it shows you what the town considers important about itself. For four hundred years, Koszeg has been keeping one single morning in mind.

At the last stop of the walk you are looking at a surviving stretch of the old town wall. The Zwinger is the space in between two lines of defence. Anyone who got through the outer wall was still not inside: they were in a narrow, exposed strip, and it was hard to get any further. Today this stretch is quiet. Stand here for a moment and consider how big this town actually is. You can walk across Koszeg in half an hour. That is exactly what is strange about it: so much history in a place this small.
